EnormaBeats® Cardio Drumming Activities
The EnormaBeats® Cardio Drumming Set allows students to experience a full-body workout using rhythm-based activities. With oversized exercise balls and durable plastic drumsticks, students will use various drumming movements to build coordination, timing, and endurance. Each activity focuses on a fundamental movement skill such as rhythm, balance, or strength, and can be adapted for students of all ages and abilities.
1. Drum ‘n Jump: Students will alternate between drumming on the ball and performing jumping jacks in a rhythmic pattern. Every 4 beats, they switch from hitting the ball to clapping the drumsticks overhead. This teaches rhythm and coordination while incorporating locomotor movement.
2. Indianapolis 500: In this cardio drumming game, students stand in a circle with exercise balls and drumsticks, every student is drumming the same pattern. Players are numbered off in threes or fours. When the leader calls their number, they run around the circle, trying to tag the person in front of them. If the leader calls “Pit Stop,” runners must return to their original position and resume drumming. If “Drum Crash” is called, runners change direction.
3. Thunder Clap Challenge: Students will hit the ball for 3 counts, then raise the drumsticks to the sky for a loud clap on the 4th beat. This repeated pattern improves timing and hand-eye coordination. Use an upbeat song like ""Thunderstruck"" by AC/DC to guide the rhythm.
4. Floor-Pound Frenzy: Students alternate between drumming on the ball and hitting the floor. Create a simple 4-beat pattern like: hit ball twice, hit floor twice. This works on coordination and core strength while keeping time to the music.
5. Drumming Dash: Place several exercise balls around the gym. Students must sprint to a ball, perform a specific drumming pattern (e.g., hit the ball twice, hit the floor twice), and then run to the next ball. The goal is to complete as many different stations as possible in the allotted time, combining running with rhythm.
6. Rhythm Relay: Divide students into teams. Each team creates a unique drumming pattern that must be repeated by the next team member, promoting coordination and memory. Use the EnormaBeats® Set to keep consistent rhythm and teamwork in play.
7. Drum Island Hopping: Spread balls around the gym like ""islands."" Students ""swim"" (run) between the islands and, upon reaching an island, perform a drumming routine before ""swimming"" to the next island. This incorporates creative movement and rhythmic drumming.
8. Beat the Freeze: Play a popular freeze dance song like ""Can't Stop the Feeling"" by Justin Timberlake. Students drum along to the music, but when the music stops, they freeze in place with their sticks up. This improves balance and reaction time.
9. Rock ‘n Roll Taps: Students drum the ball for part of a song and then roll the ball to a partner for the next part. This teaches coordination and dribbling-like movements while reinforcing teamwork.
10. Tempo Tappers: Play a song with variable speeds, such as ""Happy"" by Pharrell Williams. Students must adjust their drumming speed to match the music, improving auditory processing and rhythm matching.
11. Double Stick Flick: Students hold two drumsticks and perform a flicking motion, hitting the ball with one stick while tapping the other on the floor. This improves dexterity and coordination while keeping rhythm to fast-paced music.
12. Floor Beat Battle: Players partner up and face off, creating different patterns by drumming on their ball. Each player adds a unique rhythm sequence to the pattern. Players then present their patterns to the class. The challenge promotes teamwork, rhythm, and creativity.
13. Mirror My Beat: One student leads by performing a rhythmic drumming pattern that the rest of the class must mirror. This activity focuses on imitation, rhythm matching, and concentration.
14. Musical Balls Relay: Set up multiple stations, each with an exercise ball and a different drumming pattern. In teams, students run to a station, drum the pattern for 8 counts, and then dash to the next ball. This activity teaches running, quick transitions, and pattern recognition.
15. Drum Along Discovery: Search for cardio drumming routines on YouTube to explore different drumming patterns and rhythms. Students can drum along to videos of different songs!
