15 Fun and Fundamental Volleyball Activities Using the UltraPlay MVP Volleyball

The UltraPlay MVP Volleyball is an indoor/outdoor ball designed for long-lasting play and optimal softness, making it an excellent tool for teaching a wide range of manipulative and body control movement skills to students of all ages. With its stitched microfiber composite cover and dual-layered, air-locking butyl bladder, this volleyball offers reliable grip and control during movement-based activities. These 25 creative and engaging activity ideas help students develop throwing, striking, catching, and coordination skills while also working on agility, balance, and teamwork. All activities below are scalable for both small and large groups, and ideal for elementary through high school physical education classes.

1. Bump, Set, Balance: Students balance the UltraPlay MVP Volleyball on the back of their hand while walking heel-to-toe across a line. They stop at cones (use Rainbow SmartHolder Cones) and do a controlled "bump" to a partner, who must then balance and walk to the next station.

2. Volley Volcano: Create "volcanoes" using Cones. Students must strike the UltraPlay MVP Volleyball upwards, attempting to land it in a volcano. Teaches underhand striking and precision.

3. Spike Tag: Team of student are “it” and must tag others by gently striking the ball with a volleyball move (bump, set, or spike). Promotes movement creativity and tracking.

4. Wall Ball Wonder: Students work solo or in pairs, bumping the ball against a wall and trying to keep it in play for as many hits as possible. Focus on hand-eye coordination and body control.

5. Sideline Slide Spike: Place UltraPlay MVP Volleyballs at one end of the gym. Students slide laterally (slide step) to the ball, spike it over a net (or rope), then slide back. Emphasizes lateral movement and explosive power.

6. Volley Four-Square: Modify traditional Four Square with volleyball rules. Students must use only volleyball moves (set, bump, or light spike) to keep the ball in play. Teaches manipulative coordination and positioning.

7. Passing Pyramid: Students pass the volleyball to a partner, increasing distance with each successful bump. Uses Gopher's Floor Spots to mark distances. Builds consistency and strength in movement.

8. Dig It Dodgeball: A volleyball variation of dodgeball where balls must be “dug” up (underhand bump) rather than caught. Reinforces reaction time and lower-body stability.

9. Air Time Agility: Students must keep the ball in the air using sets or bumps while moving through a cone course. Requires control, footwork, and hand-eye coordination.

10. Crazy Catch Circle: Students form a circle and keep the ball in the air using only one volleyball action at a time (e.g., bump only, set only). Changes every round. Encourages teamwork and movement adaptability.

11. Skippy Spike Showdown: Students skip around a court perimeter while maintaining possession of the ball (light bouncing). At a whistle, they perform a spike or set into a central target zone.

12. Set and Sprint: In pairs, one student sets the ball up, and the partner sprints to get under it and set it again. Repeat for timed intervals. Develops anticipation, speed, and coordination.

13. Shadow Spike: Students shadow a partner who performs volleyball moves like setting, bumping, or jumping. Mimic each movement precisely to build body awareness.

14. Dribble and Dash: Use a soft downward dribble with the UltraPlay MVP Volleyball while navigating around cones. Teaches object control with foot movement coordination.

15. The UltraPlay Gauntlet: A final team challenge where groups rotate through 5 mini-stations: serve, bump accuracy, target spike, balance beam volley, and volleyball bowling. Test of all-around movement skills!
