It is a great piece of equipment for both solo and team practice settings.

The telescoping pole adjusts from 6-1/2' to 8'H for varying defensive options. Stabilize the trainer using the included weighted base or ground stake to ensure it will stay in place, even with moderate contact.

15 Fundamental Movement Skill Activities Using the SKLZ D-Man Portable Basketball Trainer

The SKLZ D-Man Portable Basketball Trainer is a life-sized, hands-up defender designed to help students practice passing, dribbling, shooting, and decision-making against a stationary opponent. Unlike traditional cones or static obstacles, the D-Man adds a visual and spatial challenge by simulating real defensive pressure. Lightweight and portable, it sets up quickly indoors or outdoors. Below are 15 fun, creative, and skill-building physical education activities using the D-Man to teach a variety of fundamental movement skills to students of all ages.

1. Fake and Fire: Students must perform a shot fake around the SKLZ D-Man before jumping and shooting at the hoop. Teaches: Jumping, Throwing, and Decision Making.

2. Dribble Detour: Set up multiple D-Men to create a zigzag “defensive maze.” Students dribble through without touching the defenders. Teaches: Dribbling, Dodging, and Agility.

3. Pivot and Pass Parade: Students must catch a pass, pivot around a D-Man, and make a bounce pass to a teammate behind it. Teaches: Twisting, Passing, and Coordination.

4. Step-Back Splash: Students dribble toward the D-Man, step back, and attempt a jump shot. Focus on footwork and spacing. Teaches: Stopping, Jumping, and Throwing.

5. D-Man Dash & Dish: Students run at the D-Man, simulate a shot, then dish off a quick pass to a moving teammate. Teaches: Running, Passing, and Agility.

6. Cone-to-Crossover Challenge: Dribble to a cone, perform a crossover near the D-Man, and finish with a layup. Teaches: Dribbling, Changing Direction, and Body Control.

7. Pick-and-Play Progression: Use two D-Men to simulate screen-setting. Students dribble around the screen and make a move. Teaches: Dribbling, Spatial Awareness, and Team Concepts.

8. Around-the-Defender Relay: Teams race to dribble around the D-Man and back, handing off to the next person. Fastest team wins. Teaches: Dribbling, Running, and Teamwork.

9. Post-Up Pivot Party: Students simulate posting up on the D-Man, pivoting, and passing or shooting. Teaches: Twisting, Turning, and Throwing.

10. Float and Fire: Students approach the D-Man and release a high-arc floater over its arms into a hoop Teaches: Throwing, Jumping, and Precision.

11. Triple Threat Tag: Students get into a triple-threat stance behind the D-Man, then must pivot to either dribble, pass, or shoot depending on a signal. Teaches: Balancing, Twisting, and Reactivity.

12. Jump Shot Jackpot: Place D-Men at various distances from hoops. Students must shoot over them from increasing ranges. Teaches: Jumping, Throwing, and Accuracy.

13. Sky Hook Spin-Off: Students practice Kareem-style sky hooks around the D-Man to develop rhythm and arc. Teaches: Swinging, Twisting, and Throwing.

14. Head Fake Hoop Drill: Students must use a head fake to “fool” the D-Man before attempting a layup or pass. Teaches: Turning, Jumping, and Deception.

15. Drive & Dive Drill: Students attack the “lane” and must “dive” into the open space by splitting two D-Men with a dribble. Teaches: Dribbling, Agility, and Acceleration.
