15 Engaging PE Activities Using Gopher Pathway Tunnels
The Gopher Pathway Tunnels are collapsible, pop-up nylon tunnels with mesh tops that provide excellent visibility and airflow, making them ideal for high-energy PE activities. Their standout feature is the ability to link multiple tunnels together, allowing teachers to create customizable tunnel pathways in straight lines, curves, or complex shapes. This versatility sets them apart from other tunnel options and makes them perfect for building obstacle courses, agility paths, and sensory-friendly movement spaces. These activities help students build a wide range of fundamental movement skills such as crawling, balancing, coordination, agility, and spatial awareness in fun, creative ways.
1. Tunnel Takedown Trek: Set up Pathway Tunnels in a zigzag line. Students race through while crawling, promoting spatial awareness and agility.
2. Crawl & Call Challenge: As students crawl through the tunnel, a partner calls out animals or shapes they must imitate inside, building crawling, listening skills, and body control.
3. Tunnel Relay Rampage: Teams crawl through the tunnel, tag the next person, and race to finish first. Teaches crawling, teamwork, and relay pacing.
4. Sensory Safari Crawl: Place different textured mats or soft objects inside each section of the tunnel. Students crawl and describe what they feel, enhancing sensory awareness and body navigation.
5. Traffic Tunnel Toss: Position a student at each end of the tunnel. One gently rolls a ball through while the other tries to catch it, building rolling, catching, and timing.
6. Spy Crawl Escape: Set up the tunnels as part of a “spy mission” obstacle course. Students crawl through without disturbing cones or touching lines, practicing precision crawling and focus.
7. Maze Craze Crawl: Connect several tunnels into a maze. Students crawl through to locate colored beanbags, supporting problem-solving and object collection.
8. Reverse Rocket Crawl: Students crawl backward through the tunnel in teams, building reverse locomotion and spatial control.
9. Tunnel Train Teams: Teams line up and crawl through connected tunnels like a train, promoting group rhythm and team locomotion.
10. Countdown Crawl Escape: Students have 10 seconds to crawl through before the next person begins pursuit. Teaches timing, crawling speed, and pressure control.
11. Tunnel Tug Team Challenge: Have two teams at opposite ends of a long tunnel with a soft ball in the center. Teams crawl and try to retrieve the ball first. Develops speed crawling and competitiveness.
12. Red Light, Green Light Crawl: Play the classic game but with crawling instead of running. Focuses on control, stopping, and listening skills.
13. Tunnel Twist & Shout: Inside the tunnel, students must twist around three times mid-crawl before continuing. Builds twisting, coordination, and core engagement.
14. Tunnel Volcano Escape: Place cones around the tunnels as “volcanoes” to avoid. Students crawl through and must not touch or knock over the cones. Emphasizes body awareness.
15. Tunnel Trot Time Trial: Use a stopwatch to time individual crawls through increasingly long tunnels. Encourages goal setting and self-improvement through speed and crawling.
