15 Fun-Filled FMS Activities Using Gopher Throw-Down Rubber Bases
The Gopher Throw-Down Rubber Bases are ultra-durable, non-slip bases made from thick, solid rubber that stay in place even during vigorous activity. Their standout feature is their superior grip on gym floors and outdoor surfaces compared to flimsier bases that often slide or flip during play. These rugged bases are ideal for organizing stations, defining play areas, and marking movement points. Below are 15 imaginative and developmentally appropriate activities designed to help students practice and master various fundamental movement skills (FMS) using these bases in a range of educational settings.
1. Base Dash Bash: Set up multiple Throw-Down Bases around the gym like a giant dot-to-dot. Students run from one base to another as you call out numbers or colors. Focus: Running and Agility.
2. Hopscotch Hustle: Arrange bases in a hopscotch pattern. Students hop, jump, and leap from base to base using single- and double-leg landings. Focus: Hopping, Jumping, and Landing.
3. Slide and Seek: Place bases in two lines. Students perform lateral slides between the rows, touching each base as they pass. Focus: Sliding and Lateral Movement.
4. Spin to Win: Call out different types of turns or twists students must perform on each base they land on. Focus: Twisting and Turning.
5. Hop Tag Havoc: One team of students is “It” and can only hop. Everyone else must stay on the bases and leap between them to avoid being tagged. Focus: Hopping, Leaping, and Dodging.
6. Base Balance Bonanza: Each student finds a base and must balance on one foot, in a squat, or another position until you say switch. Focus: Static Balance and Core Stability.
7. Leapfrog Launchpads: Students leap over each other using the bases as takeoff and landing zones. Focus: Leaping and Landing.
8. Target Toss Trail: Put a ball on each base. Students throw a beanbag to try and knock it off from a set distance. Focus: Throwing and Accuracy.
9. Base Jump Beat: Play music and call out actions like “Jump forward!” or “Jump sideways!” Students must land on a nearby base. Focus: Jumping and Landing.
10. Kick & Catch Course: Set bases as kicking spots and catching zones. One student kicks a ball from one base, and another catches it on another base. Focus: Kicking and Catching.
11. Side Shuffle Showdown: Set bases in rows. Students race side-shuffling between them while maintaining low body position. Focus: Side Shuffling and Agility.
12. Rubber Base Relay Rumble: Divide students into teams. They must perform a task (hop, skip, jump) to each base, tag it, and return. Focus: Locomotor Variety and Teamwork.
13. Twist & Travel Trek: Each base has a movement card (e.g., twist, bend, sway). Students perform the movement before moving to the next. Focus: Non-Locomotor Skill Variety.
