These 15 activity ideas use the Gopher Court Commander goal to help students in grades K–12 build fundamental movement skills through fun, skill-building basketball-themed games. Each activity is designed to work in both small and large group settings and targets one or more of the fundamental movement skills necessary for confident physical literacy.
1. Double Rim Dare: Students challenge themselves to make a clean shot into the tougher double rim. Use Gopher Comp 1000 Basketballs. Focus: Throwing, Accuracy, Precision.
2. Court Commander Countdown: Students shoot from five progressively farther distances, counting down from 5 points. Misses restart the count. Focus: Throwing, Coordination, Strategy.
3. Iron Arc Accuracy: Place cones around the court; each cone represents a different “mission shot.” Students must complete all missions to win. Focus: Throwing, Spatial Awareness, Planning.
4. Battle of the Bounce: Students must bounce the ball once before shooting into the double rim. If they miss, they perform a movement challenge (e.g., 5 jumping jacks). Focus: Bouncing, Throwing, Jumping.
5. Rim and Sprint Race: Students dribble from the baseline, take a shot, and sprint to the opposite sideline. Teams race for best time. Focus: Running, Throwing, Dribbling.
6. Power Pivot Pop: Students receive a pass, pivot using their inside foot, and shoot from close range. Use Gopher Rainbow Poly Spot Markers to mark pivot spots. Focus: Turning, Throwing, Balance.
7. Rebound Rumble Relay: Students shoot, rebound their own shot, and dribble back to start. Next teammate goes. Focus: Throwing, Catching, Running.
8. Commander Catch ‘n’ Shoot: In partners, one passes while the other cuts and shoots. Focus on quick motion and proper footwork. Focus: Catching, Running, Throwing.
9. Jump Stop Jam: Students perform a jump stop from a run, then shoot from mid-range. Focus: Jumping, Landing, Throwing.
10. Iron Shot Showdown: Two players face off from the free throw line. First to make 3 baskets in a row wins. Focus: Throwing, Accuracy, Competitive Focus.
11. Time Trial Tosses: Students attempt to score as many baskets in 1 minute as possible from various cones. Tally scores for personal bests. Focus: Throwing, Speed, Focus.
12. The Iron Five Drill: Make five types of shots: layup, bank shot, free throw, jump shot, and bounce shot. Focus: Throwing, Versatility, Skill Variety.
13. Pass, Plant, Pop: After receiving a chest pass, students plant their feet in a shooting stance and take a shot. Focus: Catching, Throwing, Balance.
14. Jump and Jab Fake: Students practice jab steps and shot fakes before launching their shot at the goal. Focus: Twisting, Throwing, Agility.
15. Cone Zone Shooting Ladder: Cones mark increasing distances. Students must make one shot at each level before advancing. Focus: Throwing, Accuracy, Distance Control.
