A tacky, pebbled cover with deep channels improves the ball’s overall feel and performance. It features nylon windings for better shape retention throughout indoor and outdoor play. This is our highest-quality Gopher introductory composite ball.

Superb for Beginner Play

Composite cover gives this ball a "real" feel for beginners and withstands long periods of play on pavement, while also maintaining the tack of an indoor ball. Deep channels in the cover enhance grip while learning ball-handling skills. Nylon windings offer maximum support to support ball shape. A butyl bladder ensures consistent air retention for true flight and bounce.

15 Fundamental Movement Skill Activities Using the Gopher Comp 1000 Composite Basketballs

The Gopher Comp 1000 Composite Basketball is a premium indoor/outdoor ball designed for enhanced grip and long-lasting durability, making it ideal for physical education classes across all grade levels. Its tacky composite cover allows for better ball control, helping students develop confidence while learning a wide range of manipulative and body control movements. The following 15 creative and engaging activities leverage the unique features of the Comp 1000 to teach students essential fundamental movement skills through dribbling, passing, shooting, rolling, and movement games. Activities are scalable for small or large groups and adaptable across elementary, middle, and high school PE settings.

1. Bounce to the Beat: Students dribble their Gopher Comp 1000 balls to the rhythm of music. The tempo changes during the song, requiring students to adjust dribble speed (fast/slow), direction, and hand usage. Teaches rhythmic dribbling, dynamic balance, and coordination.

2. Pass the Planet: In circles of 4–6, students pass their Comp 1000 basketballs around using chest passes. Add multiple balls to increase difficulty. This activity develops manipulative skills (throwing, catching) and reaction time.

3. Stop, Drop & Dribble: When music stops, students freeze and perform a specific dribbling challenge (e.g., crossover, figure 8, behind-the-back). Reinforces stopping, body control, and dribbling variety.

4. Around the World Hops: Place basketballs at different “stations” around the gym. Students leap or hop from one to the next, performing a basketball skill at each. Combines locomotor movements with manipulative tasks.

5. Sway & Shoot Showdown: While balancing on one leg or swaying side-to-side, students take turns shooting at the hoop. Improves balance, body control, and shooting accuracy.

6. Cross-Court Chaos: Students dribble across the gym while avoiding collisions with others. When tagged, they must complete a basketball challenge to re-enter. Develops dodging, spatial awareness, and dribbling.

7. Mirror Me Madness: In pairs, one student performs dribbling moves or tricks with the Comp 1000, while the partner mirrors them. Teaches coordination, imitation, and manipulation.

8. Roll the Rainbow: Students roll Comp 1000 balls across the floor trying to knock over rainbow-colored cones. Combines rolling, aim, and color recognition for younger grades.

9. Triple Threat Tag: Students in “triple threat” basketball stance must move around avoiding taggers. If tagged, they must perform a specific movement (jump, push, pull) before rejoining. Teaches positioning and defensive readiness.

10. Layup Leapfrog: Line students up and have them perform layups one after another, leapfrogging lines. Incorporates jumping, leaping, and shooting into a fun relay format.

11. Bounce & Tag Blitz: Taggers dribble the Comp 1000 and can only tag while maintaining their dribble. Encourages dribbling under pressure, dodging, and spatial awareness.

12. Hot Potato Hoops: Students pass the basketball quickly around a circle to avoid being caught with it when music stops. Teaches throwing, catching, and reaction time.

13. Pivot Power Play: Students pivot in different directions while protecting their ball from “stealers.” Emphasizes turning, balance, and defensive movement.

14. Slam Jam Spinout: Students spin in place three times before sprinting and shooting. Adds challenge to locomotor movements, spatial orientation, and control.

15. Basketball Barnstorm: Teams rotate between stations: dribbling, shooting, passing, rolling. A high-energy circuit that teaches multiple manipulative skills in one session.
