15 Ultimate Frisbee Drills and Activity Ideas
These activities are designed to develop and refine the skills needed for success in ultimate frisbee. Each activity focuses on different fundamental movement skills such as agility, coordination, and team communication. Whether building core passing techniques, working on defensive positioning, or enhancing overall fitness, these drills will improve the overall competence of your players in ultimate frisbee.
1. Flick It Quick: Players work on their forehand flick by setting up in pairs, standing 10 feet apart. Each pair aims to pass as quickly as possible, keeping the frisbee at chest height. After a set time, players move further apart to increase difficulty.
2. Hammer Time: A drill to practice hammer throws. Players line up and must throw a hammer to a teammate 20 feet away. Emphasize form and technique over power. Increase the distance with each round.
3. Around the World Passing: Form a circle with 8-12 players, passing the disc around using various throws (backhand, forehand, hammer). Switch directions after every few minutes to work both passing and receiving skills.
4. Disc Dash Relay: Teams of 3-4 race to complete a relay by passing the disc down the field and back, using different types of throws (e.g., backhand, flick). Each player must receive a pass before running to the next marker.
5. Hot Potato Passing: Players stand in a circle, and the goal is to pass the frisbee quickly without holding it for more than a second. This encourages fast decision-making and communication. Increase speed as the players improve.
6. Ultimate Chaos Drill: Divide the field into quadrants. Each quadrant has a small game of 3-on-3 ultimate frisbee, with a 2-minute timer. After each round, rotate teams and quadrants. This increases spatial awareness and quick decision-making.
7. End Zone Entry: Players line up 15 yards from the end zone. One player at a time runs into the end zone, while a teammate passes the disc into their path. This focuses on timing runs and passes.
8. Marking Madness: Players pair up and practice marking. One player throws while the other defends by applying pressure. Rotate players to face multiple types of defense.
9. Frisbee Golf Accuracy Challenge: Set up cones or other markers as "holes." Players must throw the frisbee towards each target, aiming for accuracy over distance. Great for practicing controlled throws.
10. Break the Mark Challenge: Players practice breaking through a tough mark by using fakes and pivoting. The defender tries to block the throw, while the thrower attempts to break their mark with a variety of throws.
11. Sprint to Space: Players take turns sprinting into space, receiving the frisbee from a handler. This drill helps develop speed and timing to get open effectively during a game.
12. Two-Disc Chaos: In a 5-on-5 setup, use two discs simultaneously. Teams have to communicate and work together to avoid confusion. This drill builds teamwork, strategy, and concentration.
13. Defensive Reactions: Set up a 3-on-3 game where defenders can only move once the offensive player moves. This drill emphasizes anticipation and quick reactions for defenders.
14. Star Passing Drill: Players stand in a star formation. The frisbee is passed from one player to the next, with the goal of completing a set number of passes as quickly as possible. Add in a defender for advanced players.
15. Full-Field Sprint Relay: Teams race from end zone to end zone using passes, with each player required to complete at least one pass before the team can score. The relay builds endurance and passing under pressure.
