15 Fundamental Movement Skill Activities Using the ClassPlus Snowshoeing Packs

The ClassPlus Snowshoeing Packs are designed to introduce students to snowshoeing with durable, lightweight shoes that provide secure traction on snow. These packs include enough equipment for a full class, complete with color-coded snowshoes and storage options for efficient setup and cleanup. These snowshoes are especially beneficial in teaching locomotor and stability-based fundamental movement skills in winter environments or on soft surfaces like turf or foam. With the added benefit of class organization tools like color-coding and storage carts, these snowshoes help educators manage large groups while keeping students engaged in dynamic, skill-based winter fitness activities.

Below are 15 creative and engaging activity ideas that utilize the ClassPlus Snowshoeing Packs to teach fundamental movement skills to students across all grade levels. These activities are designed to develop agility, balance, coordination, and other physical literacy essentials, whether on real snow or indoor simulations.

1. Snowshoe Shuffle Showdown: Students compete in a series of short-distance races while wearing snowshoes, focusing on mastering the locomotor skills of walking and running with balance adjustments. Use cones to mark start and finish lines.

2. Stomp the Snowflakes: Place spots randomly on the ground. Students must step on as many as possible in a set time while wearing snowshoes, developing agility, coordination, and dynamic balance.

3. Penguin Waddle Relay: In teams, students race while imitating a waddling penguin wearing snowshoes, working on coordination and balance. Each student must pass a plush penguin baton to the next teammate.

4. Glacier Hop Challenge: Use poly spots to simulate floating ice. Students must jump from one to the next with both feet while wearing snowshoes, emphasizing jumping and landing skills.

5. Avalanche Escape Agility: Set up cones in a zigzag pattern. Students weave through the cones in snowshoes, improving agility, dodging, and body control.

6. Yetis vs. Explorers: Tag game where “Yetis” try to tag “Explorers” navigating a snow trail. Once tagged, Explorers become Yetis. Enhances reaction time, running, and stopping skills in snowshoes.

7. Snow Step Simon Says: Classic Simon Says game but all movements must be done in snowshoes. Helps develop listening skills and motor planning while practicing fundamental movements.

8. Frozen Tag Tracks: Tag game where students can only walk along “tracks” (ropes laid on ground) while in snowshoes. Teaches spatial control, balance, and stopping.

9. Swaying Snow Trees: Students mimic swaying trees during a snowstorm by shifting weight side-to-side slowly in snowshoes. Reinforces swaying and core balance.

10. Ice Trail Trekking: Simulate a snow trail with markers. Students hike in pairs, focusing on consistent rhythm and posture. Encourages teamwork and walking stamina.

11. Arctic Animal Imitations: Students act out movements of different arctic animals while wearing snowshoes (e.g., bear crawl, moose stomp, fox leap). Encourages creative locomotor movement.

12. Frosty Footwork Relay: Teams race to perform snowshoe-specific footwork drills before tagging the next runner. Improves foot coordination and speed control.

13. Flurry Foot Frenzy: Students move continuously in a small square space without bumping into others, practicing movement in tight quarters with spatial awareness and agility.

14. North Pole Navigation: Create a scavenger hunt where students in snowshoes must find hidden objects marked with clues. Enhances endurance, direction-following, and exploration skills.

15. Snowshoe Scramble Shapes: Call out a shape, and students must form it as a group while wearing snowshoes. Focuses on teamwork, coordination, and body positioning.
