15 Fundamental Movement Skill Activities Using the Brunton Instructor’s Orienteering Kits
The Brunton Instructor’s Orienteering Kits are comprehensive class sets that equip physical education and outdoor education instructors with everything needed to teach orienteering and directional navigation. These kits include a full set of Brunton compasses, instructor guides, and convenient storage, allowing educators to facilitate large-group learning of map skills, bearing following, and real-world navigation tasks. Unlike individual compasses, this all-in-one kit allows multiple students to engage in active, movement-based learning simultaneously, enhancing teamwork, problem-solving, and physical literacy through structured and creative activities.
Below are 15 original activity ideas designed to integrate the Brunton Instructor’s Orienteering Kits into physical education settings. Each activity engages students in the development of one or more fundamental movement skills—such as walking, balancing, dodging, and throwing—while reinforcing key navigation and spatial reasoning skills.
1. Cardinal Crawl Course: Create four zones labeled North, South, East, and West. Students use their compasses to find directions and crawl to each zone using animal walks (e.g., bear, crab). Develops crawling, coordination, and spatial awareness.
2. Compass Cone Dash: Set up color-coded spots at various compass bearings. Students use compasses to dash to the correct cone, reinforcing running, stopping, and directional skills.
3. Azimuth Adventure Relay: Teams race to complete a course that includes using the compass to reach different locations and perform movements like hopping or jumping. Builds teamwork and locomotor skills.
4. Magnetic Map Mission: Students use maps and compasses from the kit to complete a walking scavenger hunt around the field, identifying landmarks. Builds walking stamina, posture control, and endurance.
5. Bearing Balance Challenge: At each directional station, students perform balance poses (e.g., tree pose, stork stand) while holding the compass in hand. Reinforces core stability and body awareness.
6. Polar Path Pursuit: Students receive a sequence of compass bearings and step counts. As they walk, they perform a different movement at each turn (e.g., skip, hop, gallop). Builds coordination and sequencing.
7. Direction Detectives: Hide objects around the area with compass clues. Students must find the object, then throw or roll it back to a home base. Encourages exploration and object control.
8. Spin to Win Bearings: Use a spinner with compass bearings. Students spin and move in that direction using a movement style (e.g., hop, slide, jump). Reinforces turning, balance, and locomotion.
9. The Orient Express: Students use compass bearings to run to checkpoints where they perform locomotor tasks like galloping or leaping. Combines endurance with skill performance.
10. North Pole Navigation: Groups race to the “North Pole” (a cone placed in a hidden direction). Teams must follow compass clues and sprint to be first. Encourages teamwork and speed.
11. Freeze and Face: While music plays, students move freely. When it stops, they freeze and must rotate to face north or another called direction. Develops balance and body orientation.
12. Compass Command Crawl: Teacher calls out a direction and movement (e.g., “East bear crawl”). Students must execute both accurately. Combines compass reading with non-locomotor movement.
13. Jump & Judge Bearings: At each station, students jump in the direction they think the compass is pointing, then check their accuracy. Combines jumping and orientation practice.
14. Navigate & Negotiate: Pairs use their compasses to direct each other blindfolded through a simple course using verbal cues only. Builds trust, communication, and spatial awareness.
15. Compass Chaos Circle: In a large circle, students rotate using compass bearings and perform actions at each stop (e.g., twist, sway, squat). Reinforces rotation, balance, and flexibility.
