River Stones and Hilltop Stepping Stones
Students learn coordination, balance, and depth perception as they hop from stone to hilltop! Varying heights and distances require good judgment for each jump, while each landing requires full-body control to stay on the stone and off of the floor.
Develop Core Skills
Varying sizes, heights, and shapes emphasize each aspect of jumping and landing, creating awareness of footing, momentum, distance, and form. Angled designs add to the challenge because students must learn how to regain control of their bodies after landing on an uneven surface.
Teachers can create a custom course based on their students' abilities. They can decrease difficulty by using stones of similar sizes in shorter distances, or they can increase the difficulty by varying the stone size and increasing the distance between them.
Built for Safety
Built to withstand the impact of students jumping from one stone to another, a rubberized texture adds extra grip to the surface of the stones and hilltops. A rubber trim around the base keeps each stone in place at all times. Their triangular shape gets smaller toward the peak and adds a tiered texture for additional traction.
Set of 6 River Stones includes 3 small (9-3/4"W x 1-3/4"H) and 3 large (14"W x 3-1/4"H). Set of 5 Hilltops includes 3 sizes: 14"W x 3-3/8"H, 16"W x 6-3/4"H, and 17"W x 10"H. All support up to 110 lb.
15 Skill-Building Balance Games Using River Stones and Hilltop Stepping Stones
The River Stones and Hilltop Stepping Stones from Gopher Sport offer an exciting and safe way to build students’ balance, agility, coordination, and confidence. This versatile set features varied heights and slope angles to simulate natural terrain, challenging students with different levels of difficulty as they step, hop, and leap between each surface. The non-slip rubber bottoms keep the stones stable, while the tactile top surfaces promote secure footing. The elevation difference between the River Stones and Hilltops allows for dynamic activity design, helping students develop essential Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) in creative and age-appropriate ways. Below are 15 engaging activity ideas ideal for teaching PE students of all ages.
1. Mountain March: Students walk across a path of River Stones and Hilltops in a set pattern, focusing on balance and body control with every step.
2. Leapfrog Summit: Students leap from one elevated Hilltop to another, practicing leaping and soft landing techniques on different height levels.
3. Stepping Stone Story Time: Assign an action or sound to each color or height. Students create movement “stories” by stepping and performing each action as they go.
4. Balance Freeze Zones: On command, students freeze on their current stone and hold a balance pose for five seconds — works static balance and core stability.
5. River Run Relay: In teams, students take turns crossing the course, tagging the next teammate. Emphasizes speed, agility, and careful foot placement.
6. River Jump Challenge: Place a gap between stones and challenge students to jump across with one foot or two, focusing on explosive movement and safe landing.
7. Tactile Trail Mix: Mix Hilltops and River Stones in a winding path that students must walk or run across without falling off — a dynamic balance challenge.
8. Balance Beam Bridge: Use the stones as anchors on either end of a balance beam or rope. Students must travel across the beam and step onto a stone to finish.
9. Lava Leap Line: Stones represent safe land; the floor is “lava.” Students must plan and travel from stone to stone without touching the ground.
10. Island Fitness Circuit: Each stone becomes a fitness station. Students stop and perform an exercise (e.g., squats or arm circles) before moving on.
11. Partner Balance Pass: Partners stand on nearby stones and toss a beanbag (e.g., "Gopher Beanbag Bonanza Set") back and forth without stepping off.
12. Hilltop Hi-Five Race: Students must hop to a Hilltop, find a partner, and high-five before hopping to the next. Encourages cooperation and rhythmic movement.
13. Traffic Jam Trek: Multiple students enter the course at once and must avoid collisions while staying on the stones. Teaches awareness and path adjustment.
14. Steady Climb Challenge: Stack River Stones and Hilltops in progressive height order. Students step up and then down, mimicking hill climbing while strengthening the legs.
15. Nature Hike Simulation: Create a nature-themed obstacle course using River Stones and Hilltops to simulate crossing a rocky trail — blending imagination with real physical skills.
